Third CIRCULAIR Webinar on 16 December 2025

Third CIRCULAIR webinar on 16 December 2025

The third CIRCULAIR webinar will be organized on Tuesday 16 December 2025 from 16.00 to 17.00 (CET) and will explore recent breakthroughs in bioliquid upgrading, with a special focus on hydroprocessing.

Abstract:

Thermochemical processing of biomass offers a powerful route to transform low-grade or waste materials into valuable biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). However, products from processes such as hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and pyrolysis require upgrading to meet fuel standards. In this webinar, we will explore recent breakthroughs in bioliquid upgrading, with a special focus on hydroprocessing. Daniele Castello (Aalborg University, Denmark) will share the latest results from the CIRCULAIR project on upgrading HTL biocrudes derived from agricultural residues. Jens Anders Hansen (Topsoe, Denmark) will present cutting-edge work on converting sewage sludge pyrolysis oil into SAF.

Agenda:

  • “Upgrading HTL biocrudes from agricultural waste: from pretreatment to innovative processing solutions” by Daniele Castello (Aalborg University)
  • “Upgrading of sewage sludge derived pyrolysis oil to sustainable aviation fuel” by Jens Anders Hansen (TOPSOE)

Registration is now open.

About the speakers:

Dr. Daniele Castello is an Associate Professor at Aalborg University’s Department of Energy, specializing in advanced biofuels and thermochemical conversion of biomass. He earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy, and has held research positions in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Italy. Daniele has authored nearly 40 peer-reviewed papers and participates in major EU-funded projects on sustainable fuel production from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). As vice-leader of the Carbon Lab research group and member of IEA Bioenergy Task 34, he drives innovation in hydrothermal and catalytic processes.

Dr. Jens Anders Hansen is a Lead Scientist at Topsoe A/S with over three decades of experience in catalyst and process development for clean fuels and renewable energy. He holds an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Jens has led major R&D projects, designed pilot plants worldwide, and contributed to advancing hydrocracking and biomass upgrading technologies. His work includes numerous publications, patents, and innovations in refining and sustainable fuel production. Passionate about bridging science and industry, he has been instrumental in shaping next-generation energy solutions.
